Loss & Grief in the Modern Age

So, something that I have been struck by over the past year is how fucked up our modern age is. I lost my childhood dog, had my Fiesta’s brake damaged by a shop and had our CX-3 stolen.

What do those events have in common? Photos. I either took a lot of photos of my dogs last day or photos of damage to my cars. What else do they have in common? Google making me sad.

Many of you use Google photos I’m sure. You get the automatically compiled albums, music videos and gifs that are sometimes made from your pics.

In each of the scenarios above, Google Photos has gone and made what I would call, a breathtakingly inappropriate video of my grief.

Like this one they made today from my photos yesterday.

Jazzy!

After a shitty event, Google is pretty much like: “Hey COFL, how about a video of your dogs last day set to jazzy music?”

Uh...no thanks Google.

And the worst part is it does this for DAYS after the photos are taken. Gifs, photos with filters automatically added, gifs, photo albums.  All sent to me with a push notification reminding me of how shitty things currently are.

This modern technological dystopia isn’t just limited to photos from my phone. I can’t visit a site without ads for the Sportwagen that I may not get now showing up or ads for CX-3's (researching value). I was also thinking about CB’s recent post about Facebook uploading pictures of him and his ex to Facebook’s dating app.

I don’t have social media, but I can’t ditch google. I wish as a society we could tell tech companies to fuck off.

The google movies are universally terrible. I’ve tried and tweak them but they always just make me want to properly edit them instead.

I don’t use Google photos for personal stuff, but my work does use it for my site photos. I’ll be at a layover airport on the way home and it’ll prompt me to view a video about my vacation at Bob’s Big Trucks or Hannah’s Halfway House and Treatment Center. It’s definitely bizarre.

My work phone started syncing with my google photos. I had to stop it. Nothing like pics of injured peope , burned out buildings, or other things spliced inbetween my car and puppy photos

I’ve had Google go, years later, “hey, do you want an album of photos from this date?”

No, Google. No I do not.

Also, is that damage to the roof? How did they manage that?

Hooned the shit out of it! At least our CX-3 has seen more offroad action than my dad’s Rubi now.

Ha! take that old man

I’m lucky that my work phone isn’t synced to any of my personal stuff. You can imagine how great that would go.

I take a lot of camera pics, same reasons you do, but I turned off most of google Photos’ attempts at proactiveness. I’ve never gotten a photos video, based on what you’re saying, like that, although my amazon search history is varied enough that sometimes it’s like it doesn’t know what to show me that I will actually buy.

Also, I keep getting Subaru Impreza ads in Spanish, and I don’t speak Spanish, or visit Spanish speaking websites.

I will say this. Google made it really easy and powerful to search for things you wanted to see on the internet somewhere. They made it so it was free. But I’m with Heinlein when they say TANSTAAFL - and I knew this was going to come down like this. There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch!

And the vast majority of people are surrounded by commercials and tacky videos their whole lives. We find it really distasteful and bizarre, but there is some asshole right there sharing his awful car crash pics set to System of a Down and his whole extended family favourited it or whatever.

So we, as a society, just sort of asked for it and didn’t stop to read the fine print. So here we are. The lunch has been finally paid for. We paid for instant access to every webpage we want to look at with our very lives, and most people are ok with it.

I’m still very sorry about the bad things that happened to you and sympathize greatly at your plight. That video was very disheartening .

I wish as a society we could tell tech companies to fuck off.

I mean I have a work computer, a flip phone, and no social media ( unless Oppo counts ), I think that’s pretty close to telling them to fuck off?

Sorry to hear about google making you miserable, things will get better, look at what you still have instead of what you’ve lost and be thankful.

It is no big deal, just is dumb. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I took photos of a car accident I was involved in where someone was hurt.

I couldn’t help but laugh at that video.

Now, to be serious, I’ve never had Google Photos send me videos of my photos. Clearly there is a setting to change.

yeah... I was just constantly p!$$ed for like two weeks after my truck got stolen. Finally figured how I react is the only thing I can control in the situation but that is still easier said than done....

Was thinking maybe they could run some kind of sentiment analysis so they don’t create movies out of “sad” photos, but maybe they’ve got users for whom a happy weekend night is participating in demolition derbies.

I don’t use Google for photos.  I keep my pics and vids on my Mac and iCloud.  my experience is somewhat different when I go back through my albums. Remembering usually makes me smile, although some memories are tinged with melancholy or regret.

I feel like it would have been better set to “bye bye miss American pie” although in this case they appear to have driven straight into the levee.

Sidebar: lack of rhymes must be why there are so few songs about Mazdas. All I can manage is “drove my Mazda to the Kasbah”

Also there is a way to shut off the google photos “ assistant” which lets you keep all the awesome storage and AI search functions without the intrusive suggestions.
